(here)
I will not go into much details on what I think of the Bastard Child of our National Education System. That conversation was long over folks way back in 1952
The demand to recognize Chinese as an official language was officially adopted by the UCSTA when Lim Lian Geok was appointed its President on 19 December 1953. Lim was noted for his “unwavering stand and fearless struggle” (Yen, 2008:252) to safeguard the cause of Chinese education on the grounds of equality and justice throughout his tenure as the President of the UCSTA.He strongly believed that the only way to legitimize the position of the Chinese schools in the national education system was through the recognition of Chinese as an official language. This conviction was the result of a meeting with Sir Donald Charles MacGillivray, the Deputy High Commissioner, on 8 November 1952. The meeting was called by the Deputy High Commissioner to assure the Chinese educationists that the government had no intention to eliminate the Chinese schools. Lim was more interested to find out as to why the Chinese could be accepted as the citizens of the country, but their schools could not be accepted into the national education system. He was referring to the proposal of the British to establish national schools which excluded Chinese as a medium of instruction. MacGillivray‟s answer to the question was that national schools could not use Chinese as a medium of instruction as it was not an official language. This was an awakening call for Lim. Lim came to realize that efforts to legitimize the position of Chinese schools within the ambit of the national education system must invariably include the recognition of Chinese as an official language (Tan, 1997:101). source here
But what is interesting from the four recent demands is the awareness of that fact.
Perhimpunan ini menggesa kerajaan supaya mengkaji semula Akta Pendidikan dan melaksanakan dasar pendidikan pelbagai aliran sekolah dengan bahasa pengantar masing-masing untuk menjamin semua aliran sekolah yang sedia ada dengan memberi kedudukan dan layanan yang sama rata kepada setiap aliran sekolahHow to jamin that the kedudukan is sama rata when one is clearly against the Constitution and the National Language Act (here, here, here)
Well folks look at what the system has produced
KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 — A significant number of secondary school dropouts with Chinese primary vernacular education have little, or zero, command of English or the national language, according to a study. Observers say this has created a group of Chinese who only interact within their own ethnic community and points to increasing racial polarisation in multicultural Malaysia. Education ministry studies have shown that nearly one in four Chinese students has failed to complete secondary school education and their dropout rate is virtually the same as that for Malays and other races. In the latest survey of 159 schools nationwide last year, the National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) found that one-third of students from those schools cannot understand either English or Bahasa Malaysia (BM) when they transfer to national secondary schools. NUTP secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng told The Malaysian Insider the survey was to find out the reasons for the high dropout rate among the Chinese students required to participate in the “remove class”, a year-long programme to ease their transfer from Chinese primary school to Malay-medium government school. “Some students are not interested in their studies and play around,” she said, but deferred commenting on the significance of the survey.
Retired school principal Cheng Su Chean said there were Chinese students who were fluent in both BM and English and credited it to their wide exposure to different cultures outside school. “Most of our Chinese children do not have this sort of environment. And nowadays, they do not mix around, not like our time,” said the 68-year-old, who was formerly headmistress of SRJK (C) Pudu in the capital city. “Their interaction is limited. Ninety-eight per cent keep to their Chinese friends and so speak Chinese every day,” she added. Senior fellow Socio-economic and Environmental Research Institute (Seri), Datuk Dr Toh Kin Woon, observed that “this is one of the contributory factors leading to racial polarisation”. “Because of the linguistic barrier, they are not able to interact with their peers in school,” he said. The Penang-based pundit also noted that many of those who came from a low economic class formed the bulk of the drop-outs, which created a vicious cycle as “education was no longer a vehicle for social advancement” due to the language barrier. “They can’t get into government-sanctioned training institutes, so they don’t even have the basic skills [to get a job],” Toh said. “Because of this, some might go overseas where they may end up as illegal workers... which could contribute to the black economy,” he added. Tan Yew Sing who heads the KL-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall admitted that the problem was very serious and the association had set up a committee to look into the issue and arrest the problem. He said the racial divide has become more pronounced in the last 10 years, starting with primary school education.(here)
On the other end of the spectrum it breeds Vernacubeng dogs like this one roaming the cyberspace.
Chinese education is not all dongjiaozong. The term covers primary to university schooling with a special, non-Anglicised curricula and methods using hanyu (to say Mandarin is erroneous) for teaching, in reading and writing, excepting the Malay and English languages. The so-called ‘national’ school in Malay is a bastardized Anglo form, in both language and curricula, only peppered today in Arabian. Nothing national nor Melayu about it. From this perspective, vernacular education is the true national school, true to the nationals of Chinese and Indian ancestry. The existing national school is colonialism by another name. The same education system has also produced graduates such as this one.
That was the "Dr" Yap incident
KAJANG: What started out as a happy event turned chaotic at the New Era College convocation. A man went up to the stage as college senate chairman Dr Yap Sin Tian was giving a speech and punched him in the face in front of 500 people, including students, parents and guests. Helping hand: Dr Yap being helped to stop his nosebleed after he was punched yesterday. However, the attacker managed to flee the scene. Dr Yap, who is Dong Zong (the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia) president, was ushered to a seat with a fractured cheekbone and nose. An ambulance arrived later to send him to the Kajang Specialist Hospital. College principal Mok Soon Choong took over the podium to continue the speech and calmed the situation. Witnesses said the attacker wore a shirt used by members of a fund-raising event in the college. The man has been identified as a former college graduate. (here)
This "Dr" Yap is a pretty dodgy dude.
If I may quote Kua Kia Song
Yap’s unsuitability for the post of Dong Zong head can be seen from his actions. His integrity and academic capability are in doubt from his acquisition of dubious PhDs.In education, there are no shortcuts to success and recognition. (here)Tony Pua also wrote about him sometime back
Dr Yap Sin Tian of Southern College, also secured his PhD from Kensington University in Hawaii/California in 1990, which has since been closed by court order. (here)
Kensington University is one of those Con-Uni, the American authorities shut it down after some of their government servants begin using these bogus degrees for promotion
But we found employees with diploma mill degrees at the new Transportation Security Administration, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Departments of Treasury and Education, where Rene Drouin sits on an advisory committee. He has degrees from two diploma mills including Kensington University. Kensington was forced out of business by officials in California and Hawaii. Another Kensington alum, Florida State Rep. Jennifer Carroll, just stepped down from the National Commission on Presidential Scholars. (here)Guess what "Dr" Yap got from Kensington

A man with a fake degree in Education could lead an Education movement.
An education movement that supposedly represent the interest of the Chinese Community....
Supported by a Party that so called "represent" the majority of Chinese Voters...
Tony you forgot to update Guan Beng ka on Mr Yap fake degrees?
Just look at the Party leader recent interview in Australia
The ruler of Malaysia's economically most successful state says he wants to replicate that success nationwide, if the opposition Pakatan Rakyat wins office.Malaysians want a two-party state, says Penang chief minister The Chief Minister of Penang state, Lim Guan Eng says it's time that Malaysia became a genuine two-party state. Mr Lim, who heads the Democratic Action Party in the three-party coalition, is credited with clearing Penang's debt, turning it into an economic hub and governing with efficiency and transparency.
Oh my....cross border kencing ka Beng? (For facts about those claims go here, here and here)Bengs own words "We have done that in Penang, and in Penang we have shown that it can be done. We have concrete proven examples, that are tested. And I think we have the results to show. Not only do we have record budget surpluses yearly, we have reduced our debt by 95-percent. That's completely unheard of in Malaysia." (here)
What is completely unheard of in Malaysia is a mediocre Chief Minister going around town claiming that he achieved this and that.....for that I will give you a standing Obengtion as well....
