The "Halalal" Way of Doing Business

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 – Realising that officers from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) were conducting a surprise check on a food outlet at the Pavilion shopping centre, here, several other operators of food outlets quickly removed the “halal” logos and certificates that were not recognised by the department from the wall of their premises.

The director of the Monitoring and Enforcement Branch of the Jakim Halal Hub Division, Amri Abdullah, said it was believed they had removed the logos and certificates that were not issued by Jakim to avoid action from being taken against them.

He said there was a commotion briefly when the Jakim officers accompanied by officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism, and the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) inspected premises selling grilled chicken and ducks as they had doubted the way the chicken and ducks were slaughtered.

The inspection, conducted by three officials from Jakim, three officials from the ministry and five members of PPIM, was carried out following complaints from members of the public on the abuse of the halal certificate at the food outlets.

During the inspection, the food outlet operators said they obtained their halal logos and certificates through the management of the shopping complex without dealing directly with the issuing authority. – Bernama
