Poni Alak Petara:Unravelling the Linguistic Origin of Borneo's Allah

Apemacam.....did i get your attention with my last six post? ( I suggest you read them in sequence starting from Patronymic (by Apocryphalist) + a short message from me, Which Muslim Target Group, Liejdecker Original Sin, The Problem of Meaning and the pelempang post to lost ahbeng )

Are you ready for more.....or sudah tak boleh masuk kepala otak lu

I've been watching the so called "debate" on this Allah issue for a while....my take if i can quote the well hung Apocrypalist

"He quotes hither and tither but what I think you really are, is just someone with a Masters degree in Googling. Camni laaa. Kalau kail sejengkal wikipedia, tak usah diduga laaa kolam ikan puyu Jebat"

Father Apocryphalist Bizzaro in a response to wiki fisherman

I got a quick confession to make.....the shit I wrote the last few post I did not know before

Like Jibrail said to the illiterate prophet to be.......read......

I say to you today.....google if you don't know....but you must know how to ask the questions correctly and build the logic for the next question.....

One thing that I believe is that the Quran should be the final adjudicator when men cant agree...but before we get into quoting the Quran or the human edited Bibles let us look at the facts first.....

Is this a Theological debate or a Linguistic Debate?

What is the issue?

You go figure yourself on what you think is the issue.....

So are you ready? hang on to your mouse folks as this monkey takes you further into the unknown territory.......

anyway to cut long story short.......satu mamat masuk blog gua kasi ini komen....
"nampaknya pakcik keliru dgn isu Allah di malaya. research pakcik tu memg betoi dr segi sejarah takde yg salah. tapi pakcik paham ke isu herald dan Allah ni? pakcik penah pi sabah sarawak ke? pakcik tahu tak section melayu dlm herald tu utk bacaan bumiputra kristian sabah sarawak. takde kena mengena dgn melayu malaya. section melayu tu bukan utk org malaya."
paloibinmulau

It got me thinking......there is another angle which i need to cover...worry not this will not be a berjela2 post like before....i'm gonna be quick and straight to the point on this one.....

The Borneo issue.......

let us try to figure this one out shall we.....

Where do we begin.........

I say lets go waaaaaayyyyyyyyy back to the Kingdom of Poni

huh? Chill folks......

In the Chinese historic annals, Brunei was mentioned as far back as 1,500 years ago in the Liang Dynasty (502 to 566 CE).

Then the Brunei predecessor state of Poli sent tributes to the Chinese bearing the produce of the country.

Subsequent visits by other Chinese travellers to Brunei included that during the Sui Dynasty (581-618 CE), in the Tang Dynasty (618-906 CE) and Sung Dynasty (960-1279 CE).
During those years, the name Poni had also been spelled as Bu-ni, Fo-ni, Po-ni and Po-lo.

It was recorded that the King of Po-lo had sent a mission to China in 669 CE.

The differences of the names are said to be caused by the changes of the Chinese dynasties, each preferring its own way of spelling.

Surprised? I was...

So how does this fit now.....

What religion did the people of Poni practised......

Lets find out...we all know Islam came much later....

Read more here

So it was Buddism......interesting ting ting.....

If you are wondering how little this Kingdom is.....assuming you've read the document....jangan malas wahai ahbeng ahbeng sekalian....

Poni also ruled what we now call Sabah and Serawak........

ape jadi to that Kingdom?
Well like most of the ancient Buddhism kingdoms.......Islam took over

kapan ya pak? as how we in Jakarta would inquire.....

Well it came much earlier but did not took over the Kingdom.....

Kingdoms are taken over when the King normally embraces Islam....so when was this?

This was when Awang Alak Betatar embraced Islam in 1368 AD after his visit to the Johor Sultanate
Quick check again get your calculators out....

We know from my previous post that the earliest so called Christian documents Kitab As-Sawat was 1514

So 1514 tolak 1368 tu berapa tahun.....ketikketik ketik ketik...

146 years

Let me now make a simple hypothesis

proposition 1:

In Buddhism got Allah or not?

proposition 2:

What happens to the Sultan's subject normally after the Sultan converts to Islam?

Lets start with proposition 1:

I shall give 10K Uranus Dollars for anyone who can prove that Allah exist and worshiped in Buddhism....if no one answer lets all assume that the answer is a NO?

Apemacam ahbeng ahbeng sekalian got Allah meh? Come back to me please RSVP before cow comes home ok?

Proposition 2:
Let us now learn about the spread of Islam in this "tiny" modern state of Brunei......

I noticed that most lost abengs do not have the ability to comprehend documents more than 2 pages......so in the interest of the lost abengs i shall provide this link for your perusal

don't be afraid to click the link ma....got pictures, got cartoon and simpel english ma

to the rest of my readers i hope you don't mind that we lower the quality of this debate in term of reference materials

so now how beng?

How did the word Allah entered the vocabulary of the people of Sabah and Serawak as we know it now?

before we go into the linguistic angle further....

Let me make another confession

tu sekarang.....imagine 300 or 400 years ago......apeke lancau pun kita satu malaysia ni sekarang tak paham kut....

Let us now find out about Tuhan , God or what ever it is that these people sembah la
First of all i think most of us here are aware that most of the forefathers of our Sabah & Serawak folks were practising animism........which makes this kinda the Blue Ocean for religious conversion by both side of the divide (Islam vs Christianity....I shall try to address this in my next post kalu gua tak malas la)

For some interesting observations about them read this

The Pagan Tribes of Borneo:
A Description of Their Physical Moral and Intellectual Condition With Some Discussion of their Ethnic Relations by Charles Hose and William McDougall
Published July 1912

and this

The Natives of Serawak and Brittish North Borneo 1896
Many ways to read it so choose from here

Again folks in the interest of ahbengs malas baca i've extracted some points which i think is important for all of us here

first there is soooooooooo many Gods la all this people from Sabah Serawak used to sembah....but what is important in our debate is how the word Allah came into their vocabulary and if they actually understood what it means or not.......

Di sebabkan banyak sangat Tuhan kat Sabah Serawak gua kasi tunjuk same lu one of them.....Petara...the Sea Dayak God

So this cawat going people were fully aware that Allah Taala is what the Malays call their God?No? (abeng gagap style again if you dont mind)

and the best part folk this is how they use after they pinjam Allah S.W.T

THEY WILL NOW SHOVE THE NAME OF ALLAH TAALA TO FILL UP THE NICHE OF A PANTHEOR, OR TO COMPLETE A LINE OR MAKE UP A RHYME

say what? Banyak cantik lu main selit aje nama Tuhan gua.....

Ok lets say la that the Missions who are very macho explorers dared to go deep into the jungles and mingle with babis and all la.....promoted this ciplak "Allah Taala" as per their doctrine....what do we do with the mess they have created?

if you also notice folks are saying look at Indonesia ....they got no problem with use of Allah...

let me tell you something as someone who have lived here for a number of years (sorry can say exact nanti kena pin-point dengan Vatican Assassins)

Lu pergi tanya semua orang Indonesia Muslim of course....

they'll say oh.....iya pak "Tuhan A-lah" not like our "Allw-Lah"......

The sound of the words is the very the different la ahbengs......

You wanna know why?

Who were their preachers?

Locals or Mat Salleh.....

Ever heard a Mat Salleh non muslim say the word Allah?

Get it?

Which is why i dont understand now why in the world the stupid government sent bingai of the year to negotiate with the East malaysian

if it was me at the negotiating table....

I would have ask for them to drop the silent L

So how Pakiam ane....deal no deal?

oh oh one more thing before i forget......remember the clause "other than Religion and Custom" in Pangkor treaty......the Brits had that with Brunei as well.....go google your self while doing so try to find out as well how British break Brunei apart into what you know now as Sabah and Serawak.....

tu la dia orang buat proposal nak buat Satu Sekolah system , improve the quality of history lessons tak nak......nak duduk jugak kat sekolah vernacular.
